Univ. Prof. Dr. med.

Rudolf A. Hatz

Specialized in: thoracic surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich offers the full range of surgical treatments for thoracic diseases. This includes video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, VATS lobectomy, VATS thymectomy, robotic surgery, open thoracic surgery for bronchogenic cancer, pleural mesothelioma and mediastinal tumors. In addition, there are offered all surgical interventions in the field of reconstructive thoracic surgery, including correction of keeled-shape chest and funnel chest. The department is headed by Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Rudolf A. Hatz.

The department has its own Endoscopic Unit where one can undergo all necessary diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions. The department offers a variety of effective diagnostic methods: flexible and rigid bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy for both assessment and histological examination of lymph nodes and tumors in the respiratory tract and bronchi. The doctors of the Department of Thoracic Surgery are highly experienced in the treatment of diseases that cause narrowing of the respiratory tract and bronchi. Also, they have been for many years performing a successful stenting of the respiratory tract and bronchi in benign and malignant constrictions obstructing breathing.

The department is the Lung Transplant Expert Center (Munich Lung Transplant Group MLTG). Lung transplantation aims to improve the quality of life and to increase its duration. Critically ill patients undergo extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Through the use of the improved technologies and materials, ECMO can reduce complications and provide a safe waiting for a lung transplant surgery, especially in awake patients without ALV

For the excellent quality of treatment and modern quality management, the Department of Thoracic Surgery has been certified by TÜV SÜD, according to the requirements of DIN ISO 9001: 2008.
