About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Orthopedics, Spinal Surgery and Foot Surgery at the LVR Clinic for Orthopedics Viersen provides the full range of medical services in its areas of specialization. It provides diagnostics and conservative and surgical treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in adults and children. Of key interest are hip, knee, and shoulder joint replacement surgeries, arthroscopic procedures, and the treatment of rheumatic joint lesions. A priority area of the department's daily clinical practice is also spinal surgery. The specialists are skilled in conservative and surgical techniques for the treatment of herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal instability, and chronic pain syndromes. The department's team of orthopedists performs orthopedic surgery of any complexity using the most advanced and minimally invasive surgical techniques. When performing joint replacement surgery, doctors use advanced computer navigation systems to implant the prosthesis with pinpoint precision. The department's therapeutic capabilities are complemented by the treatment of foot diseases and deformities in adults and children. In addition, the department offers physiotherapeutic treatment on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The Head Physician of the department is Dr. med. Jochen Nessler.
The department's team of orthopedists has been successfully performing hip replacement surgeries for many years, the main indications for which are arthrosis, rheumatic hip lesions, congenital deformities (for example, X- and O-shaped deformities of the lower extremities and hip dysplasia), and other pathologies. Arthroplasty is prescribed only when conservative treatment methods do not give the desired result and the patient suffers from pain and limited mobility. The department's specialists perform operations using cemented and cementless fixation techniques, with the decision on the most suitable technique for the patient being made on an individual basis. For older patients, cemented arthroplasty is more often indicated, since the main condition for hip replacement surgery with cementless fixation is a sufficient volume of bone tissue and good bone mineral density. The department's orthopedists work with prostheses from leading global manufacturers with a service life of 20 years or more. It is worth noting that the department has been part of the German Arthroplasty Registry (EPRD) since 2013, which makes it possible to evaluate the pros and cons of the endoprostheses used many years after the operation. Hip replacement surgery is performed in the department under general anesthesia through a dorsal approach. The surgery takes 60-90 minutes. Not later than one day after the surgery, the patient is transferred to a regular ward and physiotherapists work with him or her. The hospital stay lasts 6-8 days.
The department's specialists are deservedly proud of their outstanding success in the field of knee replacement surgery. More than 900 such operations are performed here every year, which indicates extensive experience and competence in this field. Knee arthroplasty is indicated in cases of degeneration and destruction of articular components, as well as when conservative treatment methods are ineffective. The department's orthopedists specialize in the implantation of superficial and sliding prostheses: superficial ones are implanted in cases of severe wear of the articular surfaces of the knee joint, while sliding ones are implanted in cases of partial damage to the knee joint without signs of degeneration of the ligamentous apparatus. During knee replacement surgery, the department's surgeons use modern computer navigation, which allows for high-precision positioning of the prosthesis. This ensures normal flexion and extension of the knee.
An important area of work for the department’s orthopedic team is the treatment of spinal diseases. Patients with herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spinal instability, and chronic back pain most often seek medical attention here. The department's priority area of specialization is surgery for lumbar disc herniation. Such surgical procedures are performed using minimally invasive techniques under general anesthesia with modern surgical microscopes. It is worth noting that surgery for a herniated disc is a last-line treatment, as the pathology in many cases responds well to conservative therapy. The department also regularly performs surgery for spinal stenosis, in which the patient experiences severe pain in the lumbar region and lower extremities. The most effective surgical intervention for this pathology is spinal canal decompression, which allows to increase its lumen and eliminate compression in the nerve structures. The operation is performed through a minimally invasive approach, which makes the postoperative recovery extremely fast. The hospital stay is about 5 days, during which time experienced physiotherapists work with the patient.
The department also provides medical services for young patients with orthopedic diseases. The department specializes in the treatment of hip diseases (hip dysplasia, Perthes' disease, and others), scoliosis, and clubfoot. Children are offered both conservative and surgical treatments. Surgery is performed using minimally traumatic techniques, taking into account the child's age and age-related developmental characteristics of the musculoskeletal system.
