About the department
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery at MCLINIC Munich provides the full range of services in its areas of specialization. The department offers diagnostics and surgical treatment of pathologies and defects of the oral cavity, jaws, and soft and hard tissues in the face and neck. The department also offers surgical dentistry services. The medical facility treats diseases of the oral mucosa and periodontitis and performs wisdom tooth removal procedures and dental implantation. In the field of plastic surgery, the department offers reconstructive and aesthetic interventions in the face and neck. Reconstructive surgery is most often performed after surgery to remove a head or neck tumor, while face and neck aesthetic plastic surgery is performed in the department to improve the appearance of the patients at their request without any medical indications. At the stage of preparation for surgery, the patient always receives complete information about possible surgical treatment options and the expected results of the operation. The department has advanced 3D computer technologies for modeling images of the patient's future appearance. The extensive experience of the department's surgeons and their excellent professional skills allow them to successfully treat clinical cases of any severity. The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Denys Loeffelbein.
One of the key clinical focuses of the department's oral and maxillofacial surgeons is the treatment of diseases and deformities of the upper and lower jaws. The department has accumulated impressive experience in treating patients with cleft lip and palate, jaw cysts and abscesses, temporomandibular joint pathologies, osteonecrosis of the jaw, jaw bone atrophy, and dysgnathia (malocclusion). Depending on the diagnosis, the department's specialists offer patients surgical procedures such as osteotomies of the upper and lower jaws, bimaxillary osteotomies, genioplasty, and arthroscopic interventions on the temporomandibular joint. Orthognathic procedures are performed under general or local anesthesia.
The department regularly treats patients with oral diseases, the most common of which is periodontitis, an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the root of the tooth. The main manifestations of pathology include pronounced pain when chewing or touching, swelling and redness of the gum, pus accumulation in the gum, and bad breath. The department's oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat early stages of periodontitis using only conservative treatment, which may include oral antibiotics or local injections of antibiotics under the gum and dental deep cleaning (the procedure involves cleaning the gums and teeth up to the roots). Patients with advanced stages of periodontitis are indicated for surgical treatment. The department's specialists successfully perform gingival flap surgery, gingivoplasty (gingival plastic repair), or guided tissue regeneration, with the optimal type of surgical procedure being determined for each patient individually.
The department's team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons is also highly skilled in the treatment of benign and malignant head and neck tumors. Patients with oral cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer, paranasal sinus cancer, salivary gland cancer, and skin tumors in the face and neck receive medical care with the participation of specialists from the Center for Head and Neck Surgery at the Helios Hospital Munich West. Interdisciplinary tumor boards are held here on a weekly basis with the participation of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, oncologists, and radiologists, during which doctors jointly study the patient's diagnostic results and develop the most effective treatment regimen, taking into account the individual needs of the patient. An integral part of the treatment of a head or neck tumor is its surgical resection. The department's oral and maxillofacial surgeons prefer minimally invasive techniques, and laser surgery may be used if clinically indicated. It is important for the specialists to ensure the best therapeutic result, but aesthetic aspects are always taken into account. In cases of extensive resections, reconstructive plastic surgery is additionally performed. The treatment regimen almost always includes chemotherapy, and radiation therapy may also be indicated.
The department also successfully performs many plastic surgeries on the face and neck. The surgeons most often perform aesthetic plastic surgery to improve the patient's appearance. For example, operations to remove Bisha's lumps, blepharoplasty, otoplasty, mentoplasty, rhinoplasty, forehead lift, and face and neck lift are regularly performed here. These surgeries are performed at the patient's request.
The department's range of surgical services includes the following:
