About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology, Facial Plastic Surgery at the Park-Clinic Weissensee Berlin offers diagnostics and treatment of the full range of ENT diseases. The department also performs various facial interventions, including rhinoplasty, reconstructive surgery after tumor removal, facelift and many others. The department specializes in microsurgery of the nose, larynx, salivary glands and neck soft tissues. Paranasal sinus and nasal septum surgery is successfully performed here. Of particular interest is the treatment of face and neck malignancies. It is worth noting that oncopathologies are treated t in cooperation with oncologists and radiation therapists at the University Hospital Charite Berlin. The department uses the latest endoscopic and microsurgical techniques, and various types of laser therapy, contributing to low-traumatic treatment and the shortest possible duration of hospitalization. The department has a total of 40 beds for hospitalization. Patients' health is in the safe hands of highly qualified doctors who always provide customized treatment and surround a patient with care.
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Dr.h.c. Hans Behrbohm. The doctor is a unique specialist in the field of surgical otolaryngology who has more than 40 years of successful clinical practice. He has developed many modern microsurgical and endoscopic techniques, for example, biostatic surgery for chronic sinusitis. In addition, the professor specializes in facial plastic surgery, hearing improvement surgery, and surgical treatment of salivary gland diseases. The professor has performed more than 25,000 interventions in the areas of his specialization, which demonstrates his wealth of experience and professionalism.
One of the important areas of the department's work is functional and aesthetic nasal surgery. Before the operation, a surgeon works with a patient to visualize the desired final result using computer-assisted modeling. At the same time, key attention is paid, along with an aesthetic aspect, to improving nasal breathing function. It should be noted that nose reshaping surgery is among the most complex aesthetic interventions and requires vast experience from surgeons. Surgical interventions of this kind are usually performed using endoscopic techniques with minimal trauma to the skin and soft tissues. Thus, the recovery period after treatment passes quite quickly, and the patient does not experience any severe pain.
The medical facility is also distinguished by particular success in the field of paranasal sinus microsurgery, including at the international level. Based on the latest data on the structural features of the ethmoid bone, a working group developed a new surgical technique called biostatic endoscopic surgery on the ethmoid bone. The essence of the technique lies in the fact that only the affected cells of the mucous membrane are removed using an ultra-thin endoscope, which reduces the risk of postoperative cicatricial stenosis. This surgical technique, the development of which is associated with the significant progress in otolaryngology, is now firmly implemented in medical practice.
The department's doctors have been treating malignant head and neck tumors for many years: oral cancer, pharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer, salivary gland cancer, nasal and paranasal sinus cancer, and facial neoplasms. Oncological diseases of these groups are a complex task, since doctors need to achieve not only a good therapeutic result, but also maintain a patient's aesthetic appeal. The very first stage of treatment is comprehensive diagnostics, the results of which are considered at a weekly tumor board with the participation of oncologists and radiation therapists from the Charite University Hospital Berlin and the Cancer Center Prenzlauer Berg. The specialists discuss each clinical case in detail and cooperatively develop an optimal treatment regimen considering the patient's individual needs and wishes. In most cases, patients with head and neck cancer require a surgical intervention to remove the neoplasm. Endoscopic, microsurgical, or laser techniques are preferred whenever possible. As a rule, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy can also be used during treatment.
The department's field of competence also includes the diagnostics and treatment of otolaryngologic diseases in children. To do this, the department has a specialized unit created to treat young patients. Pediatric otolaryngologists most often perform operations to remove palatine and nasopharyngeal tonsils, tympanic cavity drainage, middle ear surgery to improve hearing, and operations to remove neck cysts. During the course of surgical treatment, endoscopic techniques are predominantly used. Pediatric otolaryngologists get along well with children and make every effort to make young patients feel comfortable and not fear the upcoming treatment.
The department's diagnostic options include:
- Upper respiratory tract, nose, paranasal sinus, larynx, and middle ear endoscopy
- Audiometry, speech audiometry and audiometry in children
- Impedance audiometry
- Otoacoustic emissions (OAE)
- Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA)
- Balance organ testing (vestibulometry)
