Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Thomas Krieg is the Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the University Hospital Cologne. He was born in 1949 in the district of Büderich, Grevenbroich. He studied medicine in Berlin. With various scholarships, the doctor had the opportunity to study and train at national and international universities and research institutions, for example, the Institute of Cell Genetics in Stockholm or the National Institute of Oncology in Bethesda, USA. In 1982, he defended his doctoral thesis in dermatology and venereology at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. In 1991, he was invited to work at the University Hospital Cologne. Since 1995, he has also been the Director of the Molecular Medicine Center at the University Hospital Cologne.
Dr. Krieg’s main research focuses include general dermatology and venereology, diffuse connective tissue diseases, vesicular skin diseases, autoimmune diseases, wound healing disorders, cell biology and connective tissue research. For his scientific work, Prof. Krieg has repeatedly received various awards and honors: the Heinz Karger Award, the Gottron Just Award, the Otto Hahn’s Medal, the Bill Reed Award and the Max Planck Research Award.
Prof. Krieg is an honorary member of both Polish and Hungarian Societies of Dermatology and a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The Semmelweis Medical University awarded him an honorary doctorate. The doctor also worked in the publishing houses of many magazines, for example, he published his own magazine "Skin and Venereal Diseases" and was the editor of the section "Research Dermatology", as well as the editor of the European journal "Wound Repair and Regeneration."
