Location

Cologne is a beautiful city located on both banks of the Rhine River. The city is famous for its centuries-old history and world-famous sights. It is also one of the largest industrial, scientific and cultural centers in Germany. In addition, the city is famous for the Cologne Carnival, which usually takes place at the end of February and lasts 6 days. At this time, one can feel an atmosphere of unrestrained fun in the city and see carnival processions of participants dressed in costumes of famous folklore characters on the streets.

For many centuries, the famous Cologne Cathedral built in the Gothic style has been the main symbol of the city. The majestic building is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the temple began in 1248. This is one of the few buildings that survived the terrible bombing of World War II. The height of the Cologne Cathedral is 157 meters. The exterior of the temple is richly decorated with hundreds of sculptures and bas-reliefs, carved stone, multi-stage portals and openings. The interior of the cathedral will not leave anyone indifferent as well: the temple is decorated with marble, gilding, huge multi-colored stained-glass windows, frescoes on the walls of the choirs and carved wooden mezzanines.

Close to the Cologne Cathedral there is another most important attraction of the city – the City Hall. The building combines several architectural styles. For example, the 60-meter tower was made in the Gothic style, its main entrance became a reflection of the Baroque style, while some details of the building are made in the style of Romanesque architecture. The tower of the City Hall is decorated with statues of honorary residents of the city who played an important role in the history of Cologne at different times.

Cologne is also home to many interesting museums, including the Fragrance Museum, the Chocolate Museum, the Roman-Germanic Museum and the Museum Ludwig. Each of these museums offers unique expositions, which simply cannot leave tourists indifferent.

After visiting historical monuments and excursions in museums, the guests of the city can go to cozy cafes and restaurants to taste national cuisine. Cologne also offers great shopping opportunities – huge malls with well-known budget brands and luxury boutiques with exclusive goods.
