Hemorrhagic vasculitis is an inflammatory disease affecting the blood vessels of the skin, digestive tract, kidneys and joints. In most patients, the disorder development is preceded by upper respiratory tract infection or allergic reaction. Subject to timely treatment, the disease has a favorable course.

Diagnostics

Vasculitis can be suspected on the basis of complaints and characteristic clinical signs. To confirm the diagnosis, the haematologist prescribes a set of studies:

  • complete blood count,
  • biochemical test of blood and urine,
  • coagulogram,
  • aspiration biopsy of the skin and the vascular wall.

To distinguish the purpura from the other similar diseases, the patient is referred to consult a nephrologist and surgeon gastroenterologist. Additionally, the following tests are performed:

  • Abdominal ultrasound,
  • CT/MRI/gastroscopy.

Therapies

The program of therapy is tailored in view of severity of the disease. For rapidly progressing vasculitis, the extracorporeal hemocorrection is usually recommended, that comprises the purification of blood outside the body of the patient. Thus the blood is passed through special filters trapping the substances causing the destruction of the vascular walls. Depending on the purification technology used, there are several hemocorrection techniques:

  • immunoadsorption,
  • hemosorption,
  • plasmapheresis.
