Thoracic surgery: Thymus cancer — Excision of the thymus. Treatment abroad
Thymus is one of the many parts of a complex system of human immunity, so the complete removal of this organ due to the tumor lesion leads to unpleasant consequences. Due to the use of modern diagnostic and treatment techniques in major European hospitals, about 80% of patients with thymus tumors undergo a sparing surgical treatment, implying the thymus excision.
Course of Surgery
Thymus excision is dissection of the tumor and adjacent part of the gland. This surgery is indicated for benign neoplasms, and at early cancer stages.
To reduce the tissue trauma operational risk, the surgery is usually performed using a thoracoscopic method, i.e. a special endoscope inserted into the chest cavity through small incisions or punctures.
The surgery is complex due to the high requirements for manipulation precision, because of close proximity to the heart, major blood vessels and vital nerve trunks. Modern thoracoscopes are equipped with miniature instruments and a high-resolution digital camcorder. The magnified image is displayed on the monitor, allowing to excise the tumor with a minimal risk of damage to the adjacent anatomical structures.
Advantages of Thymus Thoracoscopic Excision
The option of choice for treatment of thymus tumors is the organ excision. This is due to a number of advantages:
- low invasiveness;
- video zooming of the surgical field, which allows precise control over the actions;
- shorter rehabilitation period;
- high efficiency;
- good cosmetic result.
Thymus excision for tumor diseases is the gold standard of the European surgical oncology.Hide
