Location

Cologne is the largest center of industry, science, culture and trade in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and throughout Germany. The city is located on the banks of the Rhine River in western Germany. It is known for its 2000-year history, cultural and architectural values, as well as events of international importance, which are regularly held here.

The symbol of the city is Cologne Cathedral, which is listed by UNESCO as a cultural heritage of mankind. It is the most visited tourist site in Germany. Nowadays, prayers and festive masses, ceremonies of sacrament and wedding, baptism and repentance are held in the walls of the cathedral. Choir performances, organ and classical music concerts are held here as well. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with marble, gilded elements and stone openwork, framing large windows and choirs. Its decoration is the original ceiling vaults, huge multi-colored stained-glass windows, frescoes on the walls of the choirs and carved wooden mezzanines.

Not far from Cologne Cathedral is an equally interesting attraction – the City Hall. The City Hall is among the monuments that were almost completely destroyed by bombing in 1945, and then restored. The ancient part of the building dates back to the first half of the XIV century. The City Hall combines several architectural styles. The 60-metre high tower is in Gothic style, its front entrance is a reflection of Baroque style, some details of the building are an imitation of Romanesque architecture.

In addition, Cologne offers its guests fascinating excursions in the museums. The Romano-Germanic Museum, the Fragrance Museum, the Museum of Chocolate, the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum are especially popular. Each of them has unique expositions, which will not leave indifferent even sophisticated tourists.

The city will also delight its guests with excellent shopping opportunities, a huge selection of hotels of various levels, an abundance of pubs, cafes and gourmet restaurants where one can taste delicious masterpieces of both national and European cuisine.
