About the department

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen offers the full range of surgical interventions for the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the soft and hard tissues of the face and neck, injuries, benign and malignant maxillofacial tumors, as well as maxillofacial malformations. One of the most important focuses of the department’s work is plastic reconstructive surgery of the face. Important attention is also paid to the interdisciplinary treatment of maxillofacial tumors, malformations, injuries and implantology. The department has modern computerized system, which allows the doctor to accurately plan the surgical intervention and predict its outcome. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Frank Hölzle.

Surgical treatment is carried out in three inpatient (operations under general anesthesia) and two outpatient (operations under local anesthesia) operating rooms. In order to perform navigation-guided operations and microsurgical reconstructions using free grafts, the operating rooms in the departments are equipped with the BRAINLAB navigation system and state-of-the-art Zeiss OPMI Pentero surgical microscopes. The outpatient surgery covers non-extensive interventions, for example, tooth extraction, root apex removal, wisdom teeth extraction, periodontal surgery, augmentation procedures, dental implantation. Laser surgical interventions are carried out in a specially equipped center.

Curriculum vitae

Since 1989 till 1998, Prof. Hölzle studied medicine and dentistry at the Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Glasgow and University College London. In 1995, he defended his doctoral thesis on the subject: "Anatomical and histological examination of vascular pedicles of various free grafts". Since 1995 till 1998, he worked as Intern and Assistant Physician in Berlin. In 1998, he wrote doctoral thesis in Dentistry, subject: "Methods for the conservation of allogeneic donor material with a special emphasis on the experimental conservation of glycerol and vascular lyophilization". In 1999 and 2000, Prof. Hölzle worked as Research Fellow in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Charite University Hospital Berlin, Campus Virchow. Since 2000 till 2007, he worked as Assistant Physician (then Senior Physician, Leading Senior Physician and Deputy Head) in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Ruhr University Bochum (Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum-Langendreer). In 2002, he had his board certification in Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as in Dental Surgery. In 2005, an additional qualification in Plastic Surgery followed. In 2006, Professor had habilitation and received Venia legendi in Maxillofacial Surgery (Subject: "Monitoring and optimization of perfusion of microsurgical grafts and the development of retrograde perfusion of perforated lobes in the mouth, maxillofacial area and face"). In 2006, he became Fellow of the European Board of Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery (FEBOMFS, Barcelona). Since 2007 till 2011, he worked as Senior Physician and Deputy Head of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich. Since 2011, he has been the Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen.
