About the department
The Department of Pulmonology, Nephrology and Cardiology at the St. Anna Hospital Herne provides prevention, diagnostics and conservative treatment of the full range of diseases of the respiratory system, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The department also has a successful experience in medical care for patients with arterial hypertension, including a secondary one (certified Arterial Hypertension Center). The department's medical team attaches great importance to a comprehensive examination of each patient in order to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the most effective treatment regimen. The therapy of a particular pathology is carried out by highly qualified doctors with the appropriate specialization. In most cases, the department's doctors use only drug therapy, but if the patient requires more radical treatment methods, then surgeons and other doctors from related disciplines are involved in the therapeutic process. The specialists of the medical facility make every effort to provide the patient with the necessary treatment in a pleasant environment. The Head Physician of the department is Dr. med.Panagiota Zgoura.
Pulmonology is one of the primary focuses of the department's medical team. Patients with pneumonia, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema and other pathologies receive treatment here. In addition, the department admits patients with suspected lung cancer, which is one of the most common types of oncology. To confirm or exclude the diagnosis, a number of diagnostic tests are required: X-ray, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, bronchoscopy and needle biopsy. Should lung cancer be confirmed in a patient, his clinical case is considered at a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board with the participation of all specialized experts. The key treatment methods for lung cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. The surgical treatment is carried out by thoracic surgeons, who specialize in modern surgical techniques that allow them to completely remove the tumor or part of the affected lung with minimal trauma to healthy tissues. Depending on the clinical indications, the surgery is supplemented with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or chemoradiotherapy.
An integral part of the department's clinical practice is the treatment of kidney diseases. The department mostly admits patients with acute and chronic kidney failure, as well as kidney stone disease. To detect kidney failure, the department's doctors study the patient's medical history, measure blood pressure, assess the condition of the heart and lungs, perform blood tests and kidney ultrasound scanning. The first-line treatment is drug therapy. If the medication is not effective enough, dialysis (renal replacement therapy) is prescribed to the patient. The department's nephrologists are also competent in therapy for kidney stone disease. In most cases, the specialists resort to drug therapy and diet therapy.
The department's cardiologists focus on patients with ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure, myocarditis, arrhythmias, heart valve defects and syncope. Physicians have a wide range of diagnostic options for assessing the state of the cardiovascular system, including resting and stress ECG, classical echocardiography, stress echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, 24-hour Holter monitoring, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, coronary angiography, cardiac MRI and other tests. With all the diagnostic data, the specialists of the medical facility prescribe the optimal drug therapy regimen and other types of therapy to completely cure cardiac pathology or alleviate symptoms and maintain the patient's normal condition.
