Location
Muenster is one of the oldest cities in Germany, with a history of over 1200 years. The city harmoniously combines modern buildings and medieval architecture, allowing its visitors to plunge into the atmosphere of bygone times. The city is famous for the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Muenster, which is one of the largest and the most reputable educational facilities in the country. In addition, the city is home to important judicial and administrative institutions of North Rhine-Westphalia, including the Supreme Administrative Court and the Constitutional Court.
One can see unique architectural masterpieces from different eras in Muenster, so it is not surprising that it attracts thousands of tourists from different parts of the world. Traditionally, the very heart of the city is Altstadt, which is the historical part of the city. The main city square is adjacent to the Muenster Cathedral. The most outstanding landmark of the city is the Schloss Muenster, which today is the university building of the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Muenster. The palace was built in the Baroque style of red bricks, while the decorative elements are made of light mountain sandstone. The Old City Hall is also one of the most important historical sights of the city. The signing of the Peace of Westphalia took place in its building. The City Hall building attracts tourists with its unique architectural beauty, great arches and stained glass windows.
St. Paul's Cathedral ranks first among the religious sights of Muenster. It was built in the XIII century. It took almost 40 years to build the temple, while its reconstruction after World War II took about 10 years. The ancient tower of the cathedral is decorated with an astronomical clock, which still functions perfectly, although the mechanism was installed in the Middle Ages. The Catholic St Lambert's Church is also an important religious landmark of the city. The church was built in 1375 and is a perfect example of late Gothic architecture in North Westphalia.
Muenster has many museums with interesting exhibitions. First of all, it is worth visiting the Muehlenhof Open Air Museum. The museum recreates the atmosphere of a medieval village, so one can plunge into the life of the Middle Ages and learn about the traditions of locals here. Those who want to get to know the history of Muenster should definitely go on an excursion to the City Museum.
