About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Trauma Surgery, Hand Surgery at the St. Remigius Hospital Opladen Leverkusen offers all therapeutic options for the treatment of injuries of any severity and their complications. It provides treatment for injuries sustained at work, at school, in traffic accidents, as well as home accidents. The medical facility has a special competence in the field of injury treatment in elderly patients. The range of services is complemented by the treatment of hand diseases, injuries and defects. Depending on the particular clinical case, both conservative and surgical techniques can be used. In many cases, surgical interventions are performed on an outpatient basis. In addition, after treatment, patients are offered rehabilitation for the full functional recovery. The department is certified as a Trauma Center by the German Society of Trauma Surgery, which indicates compliance with modern treatment standards. The department's team of doctors cooperates closely with the specialists from the Departments of Orthopedics and Spinal Surgery, so patients are guaranteed to receive comprehensive medical care. The Head Physician of the department is Dr. med. Peter Stolze.
The treatment of bone fractures in the elderly is a particularly challenging task. At the same time, geriatric traumatology is one of the priority areas of the department's work. After the completion of the main stage of treatment, relatives of the patients are trained to provide proper care at home. For excellent results in this medical field, the department has the certificate of the Geriatric Trauma Center of the German Society for Trauma Surgery.
Another area of competence of the department's doctors is the treatment of injuries resulting from accidents at work, at school or kindergarten, as well as their complications. The patients' health is in the safe hands of the best professionals in their field with rich clinical experience. In addition, a team of doctors provides 24-hour outpatient medical care for road traffic injuries.
Surgical interventions on the upper limb and hand are also one of the priority clinical focuses. The department's range of medical services includes fractures, arthrosis, nerve compression syndromes, trigger fingers, benign diseases of the connective tissue of the inner surface of the hand (Dupuytren's contracture), epicondylitis (tennis elbow, golfer's elbow), as well as congenital deformities. The department widely uses microsurgical interventions and minimally invasive operations, characterized by a short recovery period for the patient and low risks, if any. Some operations of this spectrum are performed on an outpatient basis.
The treatment of hand injuries and defects in children is carried out by a specially trained team of doctors. The specialists regularly demonstrate excellent results in the treatment of injuries in children, including particularly complex clinical cases. Staying in the hospital is often associated with a number of difficulties for children and their parents, therefore, specially equipped children's rooms are provided here.
