About the department
The Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology at the St. Remigius Hospital Opladen Leverkusen offers the full range of diagnostics, conservative and surgical treatment of ear and nose diseases. The department also provides diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the paranasal sinuses, larynx, oral cavity and throat. At the stage of treatment planning, doctors always take into account the patient's individual needs and wishes. First of all, doctors consider possible options of conservative therapy. If the specialists are convinced of the need for a surgical intervention, endoscopic and microsurgical operations are usually performed. Many interventions are performed on an outpatient basis. The department's otolaryngologists also admit young patients with various ENT diseases. The specialists most often deal with the treatment of pathological lesions of the middle ear and surgical removal of the palatine and nasopharyngeal tonsils. The department has all the necessary resources to ensure the effective and safe treatment of ENT pathologies. The department is headed by Dr. Karl-Heinz Küppers.
The department is an inpatient section of the hospital, which employs private practitioners who use the hospital's technical and human resources for the treatment of their patients. The medical facility offers surgical interventions and postoperative monitoring. For this purpose, the healthcare professionals have specially designated beds for patient accommodation.
The department's team of doctors regularly provides medical care to the patients with middle and outer ear diseases. Middle ear surgery is usually indicated for severe hearing loss. When performing such interventions, the surgeon uses a modern operating microscope, and the surgical approach is formed using sparing techniques, without extensive skin and soft tissue incisions. The operations on the outer ear are performed to repair congenital ear malformations. Such interventions are also successfully performed in childhood. Thanks to the use of the very latest surgical techniques and the high professionalism of doctors, surgical procedures leave almost no visible scars.
The most common diseases of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are polyps, turbinate hypertrophy and septum deviation. In the case of a nasal septum curvature, the patient has difficulty nasal breathing, discomfort in the throat and other unpleasant sensations. To repair the nasal septum deviation, a surgical intervention (septoplasty and septorhinoplasty) is performed. In the first case, only nasal septum deviation is repaired, and in the second, there is an additional stage of the intervention for nose reshaping.
The department's therapeutic options are supplemented by operations to remove the palatine and nasopharyngeal tonsils, interventions on the soft tissues of the neck and salivary glands, larynx and vocal cords. The doctors of the medical facility also specialize in the treatment of acute hearing loss and Meniere's disease. As a rule, the course of drug therapy takes about 14 days and gives excellent results.
The department's clinical focuses include:
- Surgery on the nasal septum and turbinates, nose reshaping
- Endoscopic paranasal sinus surgery
- Throat and palatine tonsil surgery in adults and children
- Laryngeal and vocal cord surgery
- Middle and outer ear surgery in adults and children
- Facial plastic surgery with a focus on the removal of tumors and scars in the neck and face
- Infusion therapy for acute hearing loss and Meniere's disease
- Neck and salivary gland surgery: removal of lymph nodes, cysts, tumors
- Other medical services
Curriculum vitae
After studying Human Medicine, Dr. Karl-Heinz Küppers completed a specialized training course in two hospitals in the region and worked in Duesseldorf (special focus on Plastic Surgery). This was followed by the first year of internship in New Zealand, which was mainly devoted to Pediatric Otolaryngology (scholarship of the Starship Hospital Auckland). During the internship, he also focused on the treatment of the youngest patients.
The second year of the internship was held in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Auckland. He has gained invaluable experience in the diagnostics and treatment of otolaryngological diseases, including skull base surgery and cochlear implantation in children and adults.
After returning to Germany, Dr. Karl-Heinz Küppers held the position of Senior Physician at the hospital in Cologne, where he trained young colleagues in the field of conservative and surgical therapy. In addition, his activity was focused on the surgery for large tumors, including with plastic reconstruction.
Since 2016, the doctor combines his work in the Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology at the St. Remigius Hospital Opladen Leverkusen and private practice (in cooperation with Dr. med. Martinez).
