According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt ranks among the top German departments specializing in cardiac surgery!

The Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt is a distinguished institution in this field of medicine. The department is especially focused on coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, aortic surgery, lung surgery and transplant surgery. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. A. Moritz.

Among the focuses of the department is coronary artery bypass surgery. The coronary artery bypass surgery is a standard surgical method to treat patients with the diseases of one or few coronary arteries. The heart lung machine, which performs a heart pump function, is used during the coronary surgery. The goal is to provide the patient with the optimal treatment, i.e. to minimize the operational trauma. Unfortunately, artificial circulation created by the machine exerts load on the body and not all patients endure its use rather good. Therefore, the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery also performs beating heart surgery. The main aim of this kind of surgery is to reduce the possible complications after surgery, especially in the patients with severe and comorbid conditions.

In addition, the department is engaged into active research activities, which helps to analyse the problems occurring after clinical treatment and to develop better operating strategies.
