About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Allergology, Phlebology, Andrology at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich offers all the options of modern medicine for the prevention, diagnostics and treatment of skin diseases, allergic reactions, venous diseases and andrological diseases in men. The department also admits children and adolescents with skin diseases. The competence of the department's medical team includes phototherapy, modern laser treatment methods, surgical treatment of pathological skin changes using the very latest techniques. The specialists of the medical facility have rich experience in the treatment of skin cancers – the department is certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG). In addition, aesthetic dermatology services are available here, including treatment of wrinkles with Botox and filler injections, anti-aging procedures, treatment of age spots, removal of unwanted facial and body hair. The team of the department's doctors works for the benefit of their patients, providing them with effective treatment according to the individual needs and wishes. The Head of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Tilo Biedermann.

The department has more than 74 beds, two state-of-the-art operating rooms and one treatment room with innovative systems for skin diseases. The department provides medical care to about 30,000 outpatients and about 4,600 annually. The department's experienced surgeons perform more than 3,000 surgical procedures every year. All these figures are a confirmation of the impeccable reputation of the medical facility.

The treatment of certain diseases requires a comprehensive and especially competent approach, therefore, the department has specialized centers: Skin Cancer Center (certified by the German Cancer Society), in which patients are offered the very latest methods of surgical and drug therapy, as well as follow-up monitoring; Certified Allergy Center; Center of Excellence for Inflammatory Skin Diseases in Adults and Children.

The department's dermatologists successfully use innovative laser technologies and phototherapy methods to eliminate skin pathologies. The department has ruby laser, CO2 laser, Nd:YAG laser, Nd:YAG laser and diode laser. The above mentioned laser technologies make it possible to successfully remove benign skin neoplasms (warts, xanthelasmas), hemangiomas, spider veins, age spots, as well as scar revision, etc. The most commonly used techniques in the field of phototherapy are PUVA therapy, UVB 311nm therapy and photodynamic therapy.

The department's therapeutic options are not limited to conservative methods. There are well-equipped operating rooms where surgeons perform a variety of interventions of varying degrees of complexity. A large number of operations are micrographically controlled surgery for malignant skin tumors (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma) and benign neoplasms (melanocytic nevi, fibromas, lipomas, cysts), operations for inverse acne, hyperhidrosis, rhinophyma and other pathologies of the skin and its appendages.

Another important area of the department's clinical activities is the diagnostics and treatment of allergic diseases. The specialists regularly deal with such clinical cases as anaphylactic shock, allergic skin reactions, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis and bronchial asthma, atopic eczema, contact allergies, occupational dermatoses, drug allergies, food allergies and other types of allergic reactions. The doctors of the medical facility carry out the necessary set of diagnostic examinations to determine the exact type of allergy and select the optimal treatment tactics to eliminate it.

A team of specialists in the field of phlebology is responsible for diagnosing the venous system and treating pathological venous changes. Color-coded Doppler sonography and duplex ultrasound, as well as photoplethysmography are usually used during the diagnostics. Depending on the stage of the pathology, conservative or surgical treatment is conducted. The department's doctors most often admit patients with varicose veins, spider veins, trophic ulcers, deep vein thrombosis and other diseases.

The department also admits men with andrological diseases: hypogonadism, infertility, erectile dysfunction, age-related changes. At the stage of diagnostics, doctors carry out various laboratory tests and ultrasound scans of the scrotum. As a rule, the treatment is based on conservative therapeutic methods.

The department's specialization includes:

About hospital

The University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich was founded in 1834. It combines long traditions with the very latest advances in modern medicine. The medical facility includes 33 specialized departments and 20 interdisciplinary centers, where patients can receive top-class medical care in all medical fields.

The hospital annually admits more than 65,000 inpatients for diagnostics and treatment, and about 250,000 outpatients receive effective medical care. The hospital also performs more than 40,000 surgical procedures every year, and about 2,100 babies are born here annually. One of the most significant achievements of the medical facility can be called the first transplantation of both arms above the elbow performed in 2008. The surgery that lasted 15 hours, and in which 40 doctors of various medical specialties took part, became a real sensation in the scientific world. Thanks to a unique surgical procedure, the doctors managed to give the patient new hands.

In addition, the employees of the hospital are actively involved in research activities, in which they study various diseases, as well as develop new therapeutic options for their treatment. It should be noted that the research institutes of the hospital are among the most reputable research organizations in the world. A striking example can be considered the Roman Herzog Comprehensive Cancer Center, whose specialists cooperate closely with the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich in order to find new treatment methods for cancers.

The university hospital has a strict quality management system to maintain a high level of patient care. Since 2011, the hospital has been certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 at the national and international level. The medical facility was also recertified by TÜV Rheinland in 2020.

The hospital annually provides medical services not only to German citizens, but also to thousands of patients from different countries of the world. This indicates that the hospital has an excellent reputation in the international medical arena and takes on the most complex clinical cases where other medical centers are unable to help the patient.
