Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecologic diseases found in women. This pathology causes pelvic pain, uterine bleeding, and infertility. This condition often requires surgical treatment. You can go to Germany to undergo your minimally invasive treatment: without any complications, with the preservation or restoration of your reproductive function, and with a minimal risk of recurrence of the disease even in the distant future.

The healthcare professionals in Germany treat advanced endometriosis of the pelvic cavity with laparoscopic surgery. The doctors carefully remove the endometrial tissue foci. Less often, they resort to removing the uterus with its appendages.

You can undergo your treatment in one of the following hospitals: University Hospital Rechts der Isar Munich, University Hospital Tuebingen, or Leverkusen Clinic.

Please leave your request on the Booking Health website and our specialists will help you to select a specialized clinic and a doctor, as well as tell you about our innovative treatment methods. The Booking Health specialists will help you to get to the clinic, take care of your transfers and accommodation, help you apply for a visa, and translate your medical records. At the same time, the prices for your treatment will be the same as it is for German citizens. A medical interpreter will accompany you to the clinic.

What is endometriosis of the pelvic cavity?

Endometriosis is the growth of the inner lining of the uterus beyond its normal limits. Endometriosis can be internal or external. In cases of internal endometriosis, the uterine mucosa penetrates into the muscle layer, and can grow then beyond the organ. In cases of external endometriosis, the areas of endometrial tissue appear outside the uterine cavity.

Endometriosis of the pelvic cavity is not isolated as a singular disease. The condition is the result of a progression of the following pathological processes:

  • Stage 4 internal endometriosis is characterized by the endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus, with lesions of the pelvic peritoneum.
  • Ovarian endometriomas involve possible small lesions on the pelvic peritoneum at stage 2, as well as small growths appearing on the parietal peritoneum of the small pelvis at stage 3.
  • Retrocervical endometriosis is the development of endometrial foci in the rectovaginal tissue, on the peritoneum, their penetration into the pelvic wall is possible.

Surgical treatment

In cases where endometriosis has spread to the pelvic peritoneum and pelvic organs, doctors perform a surgical removal of the endometrial lesions.

A hysterectomy is considered the only radical treatment that can completely eliminate endometriosis. Doctors remove the uterus with its appendages, as well as all endometriotic lesions. But, since endometriosis usually develops at a reproductive age, this method of treatment is rarely used.

The treatment of endometriosis of the pelvic cavity in Germany involves the use of laparoscopic surgical interventions, which are performed through short abdominal incisions. The task of the surgical intervention is resection and laparoscopic coagulation (cauterization) of all the endometriotic lesions. At the same time, doctors strive to achieve the following objectives:

  • cure the disease with the least trauma;
  • remove the foci completely so that the disease does not recur;
  • preserve fertility.

During the surgical intervention, doctors perform ovarian endometrioma enucleation, the resection of the affected areas of the peritoneum, pelvic organs, etc. Whenever required, not only gynecologists but also urologists and proctologists are engaged in the treatment process, as the process can spread to the bladder, ureters, and rectum.

Doctors provide a sparing effect on the ovaries in order to maintain the ovarian reserve. Such an approach reduces the risk of infertility.

It is much more difficult to preserve a woman's fertility in advanced adenomyosis (internal endometriosis). Where there are lesions present in a large part of the uterus without clear boundaries, there is not always the possibility to preserve the organ. However, in women with reproductive plans, German doctors perform reconstructive plastic surgery: they remove the endometrial foci from the uterus and pelvic cavity, restoring the normal shape of the uterus so that in the future a woman can become pregnant and give birth to a child. If necessary, they combine a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy (an operation from inside the uterus) to achieve the best results, while still only resorting to the most sparing techniques.

Benefits of surgical treatment in Germany

To expect the best results and avoid complications, you can undergo your surgery for endometriosis in Germany. There are a few reasons for you to go to this country:

Minimally invasive operations instead of open surgery. The specialists in Germany perform almost all operations for endometriosis using laparoscopic techniques, including for patients with adhesions in the pelvic cavity, obesity, and other conditions that complicate minimally invasive interventions. After laparoscopic treatment, rehabilitation is reduced by 2-3 times compared to open surgery.

Fertility preservation. The doctors strive to preserve the uterus and restore its shape. They do not perform any resection or coagulation of ovarian endometriomas. Instead, they perform enucleation, which involves only the removal of the cyst, while preserving the ovarian tissue, so as not to reduce the ovarian reserve.

Robot-assisted operations. This treatment option is the safest and the most efficient. With the help of the Da Vinci Surgical System, the doctors lower the risk of complications, reduce blood loss, and due to a better visibility and mobility of the instruments, they can remove all the endometriosis foci, even in the most distant areas of the pelvic cavity.

Single-port laparoscopy. Some German hospitals perform the operation not through 3 short incisions, but through a single one. Such an approach ensures an improved aesthetic outcome, as there are fewer scars left on the abdomen.
