Skin lipomatosis is a condition that causes rounded fat deposits to be stored under the skin. It is usually a harmless condition that does not present any danger. The most common areas for lipomas (fat deposits) to develop are on the neck, back and shoulders. In some cases, lipomas can form on the abdomen, thighs and arms. Sometimes just one will appear, other times there are multiple lipomas, depending on each individual case. The fat deposits are usually painless and soft to the touch. Skin lipomatosis is never hard, which is the main difference between lipomas and potentially dangerous lumps.
Skin lipomatosis develops very slowly and a year can pass before they become noticeable. People of any age can develop skin lipomatosis, regardless of their weight or gene pool, although it must be noted that lipomas are rare among children.

- During a general examination, the doctor will examine the lipoma and consider its size and shape. The patient will be asked about their medical history, to establish whether lipomas run in the family.

- Imaging tests can determine the exact location of the lipoma and whether or not the surrounding tissue is affected.
- Conservative treatment includes steroid injections, which aim to shrink the lipoma’s size (this method does not remove them completely).
- Surgical resection may be required if the lipomas are large, if there are several of them, or if they are aesthetically unappealing.
- Liposuction is also an effective method of removing fatty deposits from under the skin.
