Location

Ankara is the capital and the second largest city in Turkey. Located at the conjunction of transport routes between Europe and Asia, Ankara is well-known since the 7th century BC. Today, the city is the second largest economic center of Turkey after Istanbul and a popular tourist destination.

The city has preserved a variety of ancient sights from Roman times, such as Roman baths, the Column of Julian and the Roman Temple. From the Byzantine era, the Citadel of Hizar and the Cemetery are of particular interest. Also, in the Ottoman period, many ancient buildings were built in Ankara, which are perfectly preserved to this day.

Special attention should be given to the famous Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which is one of the most famous historical museums in the world. When looking at the expositions in the museum, one will plunge into the ancient times and learn the culture of Celts, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. All the exhibitions are organized quite well, the design is thought out to the details.

The downtown has well preserved the medieval streets and low-rise houses in the national style. The busiest street of Ankara is the Salman Street or, as it is also called, "Copper Alley". The name is not a coincidence. The numerous craft workshops and small shops offer the tourists all kinds of copper products, such as dishes, jugs, mugs, candlesticks and other things. The favorite walking places also include Ulus Square in the downtown, Kizilay Square in the New Town with many small restaurants and Ataturk Boulevard.
