About the city

Istanbul is a unique city, a bridge between continents and cultures. It harmoniously combines European sophistication with the noise and chaos of Asia. Despite the fact that the city is not the capital of Turkey, although many believe that it is Istanbul that has this honorable status, it plays the role of the country's economic, commercial and cultural center.

Istanbul is full of traces of history and different cultures, so the tourist will definitely not get bored here. As a rule, the guests of the metropolis begin their acquaintance with it from the Sultanahmet district with the square of the same name, which has long become the heart of this beautiful city. The square houses two amazing sights – the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The Blue Mosque was built at the beginning of the 17th century during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. The ingenious project was developed under the direction of the famous architect Mimar Sinan. The architecture of the mosque harmoniously combines Byzantine and Ottoman styles. The construction itself was carried out using rare and precious types of marble. When decorating the building, a large number of Iznik ceramic tiles were used, due to the heavenly color of which the temple got its name. The Hagia Sophia Cathedral is also a unique historical monument and a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. It acts as a symbol of the flourishing of Christianity, and also witnessed the death of the great Byzantine Empire. The foundation of the cathedral was laid in the 6th century AD, during the reign of Emperor Justinian. During its entire existence, it was destroyed and ravaged several times. After the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks, the cathedral received the status of a mosque, and many Christian values stored here were destroyed. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Hagia Sophia has been a museum, while since July 2020, its status has been changed to a mosque.

As for the non-religious monuments, the priority is given to the majestic Topkapi Palace. It was the seat of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire, keeping secrets and intrigues. A museum was opened here only in 1924. It is now open for tourists from all over the world. The historical monument is located on the picturesque Cape Sarayburnu, in the place where the famous Bosphorus Strait joins the Sea of Marmara. The complex includes four courtyards, each of which has its own unique attractions. Due to the scale of the construction, the palace is often called a separate city within Istanbul. The halls of the castle house at least 65 thousand exhibits, which is only a tenth of the total palace collection. The decoration of the museum itself is replete with ingenious mosaics, paintings, marble and gold elements.

Other interesting historical sights of the city are the Basilica Cistern, the Theodosius Cistern, the Galata Tower, the Maiden Tower, the Dolmabahce Palace and other monuments.

Since Turkey is famous for its trade traditions, a guest of Istanbul should go to the Grand Bazaar, which, with its unique flavor, is today also equated with the sights of the city. In addition, the metropolis offers many shopping centers, budget shops and luxury boutiques with a wide range of goods.

The gourmets will surely appreciate the local cuisine rich in spices, the strongest Turkish coffee and fragrant tea in tulip-shaped glasses. Local cuisine can be enjoyed in street stalls, as well as in cozy cafes and gourmet restaurants in Istanbul.
