Department of Cardiac Surgery

The Department of Cardiac Surgery provides a full range of surgical treatment in its area of specialization. Special emphasis is placed on heart valve repair and replacement surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic aortic surgery, adult congenital and acquired heart disease surgery, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, and artificial heart implantation for severe heart failure. Many heart operations are performed using minimally invasive techniques, which has a positive effect on the healing of the surgical wound. Minimally invasive cardiac procedures also reduce surgical risks and contribute to a rapid recovery of the patient in the postoperative period. Surgical treatment of cardiac pathologies is performed in advanced operating rooms equipped with the latest technology. The cardiac surgeons of the department successfully perform routine and complex surgical procedures, saving the lives of thousands of patients. The specialists work in accordance with current clinical protocols and follow the recommendations of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (DGTHG).

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery provides effective surgical treatment for diseases of the heart, respiratory system, and blood vessels. The team of cardiac surgeons operates on patients with heart valve pathologies, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and heart rhythm disturbances. In the field of thoracic surgery, the key focus is on the surgical removal of lung tumors and lung metastases. The specialists in this area also perform surgery to repair chest wall deformities. In the field of vascular surgery, interventions for abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms are most often performed here. The department's vascular surgeons are also exceptionally competent in the treatment of peripheral occlusive arterial disease. Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is the drain of some, but not all, of the pulmonary veins into the right atrium or superior vena cava and less often into the inferior vena cava, coronary sinus, or brachiocephalic vein. The problem with this defect is that part of the blood that comes from the lungs, instead of carrying oxygen throughout the body, goes back to the lungs. As a result, the tissues starve, and the more pulmonary veins carry blood to the right side of the heart, the worse the patient's condition. This form of defect is not as severe as total anomalous pulmonary venous return. In foreign hospitals with cardiosurgery departments, partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection surgery is usually successful and does not cause any complications.

Content

  1. Features of the treatment of different variants of the defect
  2. How is partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection surgery performed?

The treatment is carried out during an open operation. Doctors connect the veins to the left atrium. Whenever required, they also close the defect between the atria. The pathological connection of the pulmonary vein with the right atrium or a major systemic vein is then interrupted.

It is best to seek medical attention at the University Hospital Essen, the University Hospital Oldenburg, or the University Hospital Ulm.

You are welcome to choose a medical care program through the Booking Health service to receive services for organizing your PAPVC treatment. We will help you select a clinic and a doctor. We will also book hotel and airline tickets for you, meet you at the airport, and take you to the hospital by car.

Features of the treatment of different variants of the defect

Surgical correction of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection is not always performed. The management of patients depends on the anatomical variant of the defect.

If only one vein flows incorrectly and carries blood to the right half of the heart, a patient does not notice this, and no symptoms manifest themselves. The correction of this variant of the defect is required only with a significant predominance of pulmonary blood flow over systemic blood flow, that is, if Qp/Qs exceed 1.5. Normally, they should be equal, and an increase in the ratio to 2:1 indicates irreversible pulmonary hypertension.

Isolated drainage of all pulmonary veins in one lung does not cause any oxygen starvation in tissues because the second lung has a sufficient reserve to saturate the blood in the body with oxygen. If it is damaged, however, there will be a threat of hypoxemia (oxygen starvation). The defect is therefore corrected in a planned manner at the age of 1-2 years.

How is partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection surgery performed?

When performing the operation, cardiosurgery doctors replant (reconnect) the orifices of the pulmonary veins or their common collectors into the left atrium. An atrial septal plastic repair is simultaneously performed so that the two atria do not communicate with each other. After the blood is redirected through the pulmonary vein to the left atrium, its connection with the right atrium or large veins is closed, usually by ligation.

The recovery time after such operations is 3-6 months. The treatment completely normalizes blood circulation. A child will have a normal development without any complaints and is unlikely to need any repeated heart surgical procedures in the future.

Cardiosurgery departments abroad successfully treat even the most severe heart defects. The world's best clinics have high success rates for operations and a low percentage of complications. On the Booking Health website, you can find out the surgical treatment cost for PAPVC, compare prices at different clinics, and make your treatment appointment at the best price.
