Thomas Gasser is a Professor for Neurology and Director of the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research at the University of Tübingen, Germany.

Prof. Gasser studied medicine at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and at Yale University Medical School, New Haven, Connecticut.

He received his professional training as medical specialist in psychiatry/neurology at the Max Planck-Institute of Psychiatry in Munich and in neurology at the Department of Neurology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich.

From 1991 to 1993, he was a post-doctoral fellow with a stipend of the German Research Foundation at the Neuroscience Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, in Boston in the laboratory of Prof. Xandra Breakefield.

He returned to Munich to become assistant professor in neurology and head of the Neurogenetics Unit as well as the Movement Disorders Outpatient Unit at the Department of Neurology of the Munich University.

In 2002, he became head of the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases of the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research at the University of Tübingen.

His main areas of research are the genetic and molecular basis of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and other movement disorders as well as their diagnosis and treatment. Since 2009, Professor Gasser is conducting research at DZNE Tübingen.

Department of Neurology

The Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Tubingen consists of the following sections: neurology with a focus on epileptology, neurology with a focus on degenerative diseases, neurology with a focus on neurovascular diseases as well as cognitive neurology. The medical director of the Department is Prof. Dr. Thomas Gasser.

Since 2000, the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Tubingen, together with the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research is one of the largest and most modern centers of neurology in Germany. Thus, there is provided medical care and research activity of the highest international level. According to the Focus magazine rating of 2017, the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Tubingen ranks among the top German departments specializing in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease!

The Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Tubingen under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thomas Gasser aims to treat epilepsy, serves patients with the diseases of the whole neurological spectrum. A special focus is on neurological diseases, which manifest themselves as seizures. These include epilepsy, syncopes and other diseases with consciousness disorders, migraines and other pain syndromes, rare ion channel diseases and diseases of skeletal muscles.

The Department of Neurology focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, deals with the treatment of patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson, dementia and ataxia as well as movement disorders (dystonia) and tremor.

The Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Tubingen deals with vascular diseases and covers a wide range of neurological diseases with a focus on neurovascular diseases (stroke), neuroimmunological diseases (multiple sclerosis) and neurooncological diseases (brain tumors, brain metastases).

The Section of Cognitive Neurology offers diagnosis and treatment for patients with disorders of the "higher brain functions" or with dizziness and balance disorders.
