About the department
The FOCUS magazine highlights the Department of Adult and Pediatric Gynecology, Mammology, Obstetrics as one of the top medical facilities in Germany in its areas of specialization. Moreover, that is only part of the story – the renowned Newsweek magazine ranks the department as the fourth-best gynecology and obstetrics center in the world.
The department's primary clinical focuses include general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and breast cancer treatment. The spectrum also includes top-class obstetric services, ranging from comprehensive pregnancy management and childbirth to postpartum care. Another important area of the department's clinical activities is specialized consultations in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, with a strong emphasis on genital malformations. The department stands out for its excellent expertise in gynecologic surgery, addressing both benign and malignant conditions in this medical field. Many minor procedures, including laparoscopies, hysteroscopies, curettages, conizations, and laser therapies, can be performed on an outpatient basis, offering highly effective outcomes with short recovery times. It is worth noting that the department prefers minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques. However, classical open surgery is performed with the best possible precision and safety whenever necessary. The department performs over 9,000 surgical interventions and 3,500 childbirths each year, earning it a high status as one of the best in the country. Without any doubt, this facility provides top-tier medical care, as evidenced by its 97% patient satisfaction rating and top positions in international rankings.
The Head Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Sara Brucker, who is a highly professional gynecologist with many achievements under her belt. She is the pioneer of uterus transplantation in Germany with outstanding results. This gynecology specialist is the author of a one-of-a-kind surgical technique for treating Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, offering profound expertise in her narrow medical field. Moreover, Prof. Brucker is exceptionally skilled in gynecologic oncology and breast cancer treatment – her primary clinical interests. In addition to her clinical work, the specialist devotes her time to research, as evidenced by her over 380 scientific publications. She is also a member of numerous professional medical societies, including the German Society for Senology (DGS), the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG), the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE), and the International Society of Uterus Transplantation.
The primary area of specialization in the department is the treatment of gynecologic cancers, which takes place within the specialized center operating as part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Tuebingen-Stuttgart – one of the most advanced and reputable facilities of this kind in Germany. The department's medical team has extensive experience in the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. The treatment options for these malignancies range from minimally invasive surgical procedures to cutting-edge systemic therapies, such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and others. The treatment is both guideline-based and personalized, with the use of the proven classical and innovative approaches. Multidisciplinary planning of the therapeutic strategy for each cancer patient is essential here and contributes to the best possible outcomes.
The Breast Center at the University Hospital Tuebingen is the first DKG-certified medical facility of this type in Germany and ranks among the largest and most progressive breast centers in all of Europe. With around 700 women and men with breast cancer treated annually, the medical team possesses extensive experience in this field. The Breast Center is also part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Tuebingen-Stuttgart, which provides access to advanced therapies, equipment, operating rooms, and leading specialists in breast cancer management. Here patients are offered a variety of services – from diagnosis with mammography, ultrasound, elastography, MRI, and biopsies to treatment with surgery, including modern reconstructive procedures, chemotherapy, antibody therapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and pain management. All diagnostic and treatment services provided meet the highest international standards in oncology, with personalization and caring attitude at the heart of all efforts in the department.
General gynecology is also an integral part of the medical team's daily practice. This area covers a variety of benign diseases of the female reproductive system: cervical dysplasia, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. The treatment strategy is selected individually and with careful consideration of the stage of the specific condition. In the initial stages, drug therapy may be sufficient in some cases. However, in more advanced forms of the disease, a patient may require laser therapy, a minimally invasive procedure, or major surgery, which is often combined with medication.
The department also has the status of a Level I Perinatal Center, the highest level of care for high-risk pregnancies and premature infants in Germany. Patients receive high-quality prenatal diagnostics and comprehensive counseling on all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and care in the postpartum period. Childbirth takes place in modern delivery rooms equipped with everything necessary for a safe delivery. The department also offers informative courses for future parents. The maternity hospital distinguishes itself with its genuinely attentive and personalized approach to each expectant mother, along with a full range of its high-quality obstetric services.
