Location

Sion is a political municipality and the main city of the Swiss canton of Valais. Sion is also the main port of the Sion region. The city is located at the place where the river Sionne empties into the Rhone. There are several museums in the city of Sion with some of them worthy of special mention: the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Valère, where different religious items, household furnishings, weapons and uniforms are exhibited. Sion is distinct with its medieval architecture. The city is dominated by the rock Valère where Notre-Dame de Valère, a pilgrimage church is situated, and Tourbillon with the ruins of Tourbillon bishop’s castle built in the 13th century. The Valère basilica (Basilique de Valère) is a church on the south hill (there are two of them) near the eastern border of the city. Here you can see the oldest pipe organ in the world built in about 1430.

Notre-Dame-du-Glarier, a picturesque cathedral built in the 15th century, is in the old town. It has a Romanesque tower built back in the 12th century.

Church of St. Theodore (St-Théodule) is situated in the south-east from the cathedral. It was built in 1516 by architect Ulrich Ruffiner who wanted it to be a building in the late Gothic style. Its construction was completed in two hundred years. Further to the east, there is a town hall. It was built in 1657-1665 in the Renaissance style, and the stones with Roman inscriptions can still be found at its steps. The tower with the astronomical clock is of particular beauty. Sion is a most beautiful city with long and fascinating history.
