Retina degeneration: Compare Costs for a treatment abroad

Retinal degeneration happens when the condition of the retina deteriorates. Retina is the third layer of the eye. During the retinal degeneration this layer gradually deteriorates, causing the reduction of vision. The eventual outcome of retina degeneration is photoreceptor cell death. When photoreceptor cells do not function properly, they may lead the patient to blindness. Other diseases of the retina are lattice retinal degeneration and peripheral retinal degeneration. During lattice retinal degeneration the retina becomes atrophic and can develop ischemia and fibrosis. Lattice retinal degeneration can result in tears, breaks and holes of the eye. Peripheral retinal degeneration occurs in the corner of the eye.

          The eye degeneration can happen because of the following reasons:

  1. older age
  2. hereditary predisposition
  3. lack of vitamins

Causes of retinal degeneration

 It is not known why the retinal degeneration begins. Doctors suppose that the disease has a genetic nature. The causes for retinal degeneration are:

  1. high blood pressure
  2. vascular disease
  3. high cholesterol levels
  4. intoxication
  5. infection;
  6. myopia (increased pressure of the eye);
  7. diabetes;
  8. obesity;
  9. smoking;
  10. harmful direct sunlight;
  11. consumption of saturated fat;
  12. emotional stress.

Retinal degeneration may also develop because of:

  1. heart pathologies;
  2. thyroid disease;
  3. pregnancy;
  4. eye injury.

Retinal degeneration symptoms are:

  1. endocrine disorders
  2. metabolic disorders
  3. mitochondrial disease.
  4. sharp decrease in visual acuity
  5. mist before the eyes

Disease is characterized by a gradual increase of next symptoms:

  1. a perception of seeing images at close range lowers;
  2. objects become doubled;
  3. blind spots appear;
  4. distorted images pollute the vision.

During degenerative eye disease  patients are required to undergo the hospital treatment 2 times a year. Doctors also recommend to wear the sunglasses during the sunny weather and to stop smoking.

Types of retinal degeneration

  1. Hereditary degeneration
  2. Pigment degeneration
  3. congenital abnormality of retina. Congenital abnormality develops in early childhood. Deteriorating vision can appear as early as the preschool years.
  4. acquired degeneration is more common for older people. Sometimes it develops in combination of degeneration with cataracts and other eye diseases caused by age-related changes in the body and metabolic disturbances in the eye tissues.

Depending on the location there are following retinal degeneration types:

  1. Peripheral;
  2. Central;
  3. Generalized.

 Retinal degeneration treatment

Treatment of retina is a long and complicated process and it does not give a positive result. On advanced stage the return of vision is impossible. Therefore, the main task is to slow the progression of the disease, extension of the remission and improvement of metabolic processes.

The following types of medical treatment are the most common in medical inductry

  1. drug therapy
  2. surgery(includes retinal transplant surgery and vitreoretinal surgery)
  3. conservative treatment
  4. laser
  5. vitamins for eyes
  6. physiotherapy

 a) Drug therapy includes:

  1. Drugs that strengthen the walls of blood vessels;
  2. Corticosteroids
  3. antioxidants
  4. The complex of vitamins A and E;
  5. Drugs with lutein.

Unfortunately, the positive effect of drug treatment is observed only during the early stages of the disease.

b) Physiotherapy

Physical therapy procedures are recommended to strengthen the retina and the eye muscles. Physiotherapy can be effective only during the early stages of the disease.

The most common physical therapy techniques include:

  1. Electrophoresis;
  2. Ultrasound therapy;
  3. Intravenous laser irradiation of blood.

c) Surgery

The surgery may include the transplantation of the retina and also vitreoretinal surgery restores the eyesight

d) Laser coagulation

Retinal detachment is the most serious consequence of degeneration, which leads to complete loss of vision.

Using a laser the doctor can heal the damaged parts of certain parts of the eye. Only the damaged parts of the eye are exposed to the laser, leaving healthy tissues unaffected.

How to avoid the degeneration of the eye

Sometimes the processes of digestion and metabolism in the body may be disrupted due to the malfunctioning of the hormonal (endocrine) system. In order to avoid the  degeneration of the eye, a person needs to stabilize the metabolism and the hormonal balance. The nutrition and lifestyle should be changed in case they cause problems. Positive emotions are not the last factor in the prevention oft he degeneration.In some cases the person needs to abandon bad habits to save the eyesight

During and after the treatment of retinal degeneration a patient is not allowed to read or to watch TV.  In this period a patient needs to be overly careful and substitute mentioned activities with:

  1. listening to CDs
  2. listening to audiobooks
  3. talking on the phone
