Location
Frankfurt an der Oder is a picturesque town in East Germany, in the federal state of Brandenburg. The town was badly damaged during World War II, so it cannot boast of an abundance of historical monuments and ancient architecture, but it pleases the eye with modern buildings and structures. In addition, although not in large numbers, there are still interesting sights for getting to know German traditions and having a good time.
The very heart of Frankfurt an der Oder is its central square with the Gothic Town Hall, which survived the bombings of World War II and has retained its original appearance. The Town Hall impresses with its elaborately decorated facade and its grandeur. In the building of the Town Hall there is a gallery of modern paintings, which offers many interesting masterpieces of art. The central square often hosts fairs and folk festivals. The square also houses boutiques, antique shops, cafes, and restaurants where one can have a delicious meal and just have a good time.
One of the most popular sights in the town is also St. Mary's Church, built in the 13th century and restored after the war. The church is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Despite numerous restoration efforts, surprisingly beautiful 14th-century stained-glass windows, an ancient altar, bronze candlesticks, and other ancient relics have been preserved here.
The pride of Frankfurt an der Oder is the botanical garden, the landscape park called Lennepark, the Stadtwald Forest Park, and the Wildlife Park. Both locals and tourists enjoy spending time here, arranging hiking, cycling, and picnics.
