Location

Bad Berka is a picturesque and cozy town located in Thuringia, Germany. The town is subdivided into 8 districts and is the resort center of the region. Bad Berka is famous for its mineral springs, and therefore it has the status of a spa town with health-improving medical facilities, where people undergo rehabilitation treatment after various diseases and injuries. The very heart of the town is the market square with an old fountain, the Town Hall, as well as with a lunar clock showing the corresponding phases of the moon in the blue and gold hemispheres. The square is a venue for various exhibitions and festivals.

Bad Berka is surrounded by the famous Ilmtal Nature Reserve. Many people come here to take a break from the bustle of the metropolises, enjoy a quiet and unhurried life of a provincial town. As for the sights, it is worth noting the ruins of an ancient castle located on top of a hill and, as was customary in those days, surrounded by a moat. Its construction dates back to 1280. The castle served as the residence of various rulers of the town and nowadays it is a museum.

The town also houses an armory, which has now been converted into the Hunting Equipment Museum. It contains a large collection of hunting gear, which includes various guns, traps and ammunition. There is also a restaurant and a library on the territory of the armory.

It should be noted that the history of the town is closely related to the work of Goethe. Goethe supported and guided the construction of spa facilities in Bad Berka. Goethe and his wife Christiane loved to spend their holidays in the town and its baths. The town offers many objects and memorials dedicated to the great writer. Lovers of Goethe's work should definitely visit the Goethe House, which is a museum showing the life of the writer and people of that time, as well as the Goethe Fountain, which is a healing spring and a bathing complex.
