Location
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a picturesque mountain resort town, which is located in the valley surrounded by the Bavarian Alps. The Zugspitze Mountain is the highest point in Germany. It is located not far from the town. The history of the town began in 1935, before the Olympic Games in 1936, by the merger of two ancient settlements Garmisch and Partenkirchen. The town is also known for the fact that the outstanding German composer Richard Strauss lived here for many years. The composer lived here during World War II and died at the age of 86 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen where he was buried. Nowadays, in honor of the world-famous composer, the town hosts a festival named after Richard Strauss.
The main attractions of the town are the mountains, in which it is buried. Special attention should be given to the Zugspitzbahn, which is a railway line leading to the Zugspitze Mountain. Partnachklamm is a picturesque gorge, which was created by a stream flowing down from the mountains. In addition, Garmisch-Partenkirchen impresses with its extraordinarily beautiful architecture. In any part of the town, one can see medieval-style houses decorated with drawings (mainly on biblical scenes).
One of the most attractive places for walking in the town is the Ludwigstrasse street, which has preserved the historical buildings of various periods and styles. It houses one of the town's oldest parish churches, which was partially destroyed during a strong fire in 1865. Immediately after the fire, the magnificent neo-gothic church was completely restored. Nowadays, it continues to delight both locals and tourists with its spectacular views. Many of the historic houses now house attractive restaurants and souvenir shops, and there are several prestigious hotels on the historic street.
In the immediate vicinity of the town, there are several ancient castles. Elmau Castle is the most interesting among them. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and today, the restored castle houses a prestigious luxury hotel. Anyone can spend a few days in this historic building and enjoy its luxury. The castle has preserved a beautiful concert hall, which regularly hosts chamber music concerts since 1957 till the present time.
