About the disease

Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is a cardiac conduction abnormality whereby the activation of the left ventricle of the heart is delayed, causing the left ventricle to contract out of time with the right ventricle. As a result, bundle branches can become blocked. A bundle branch is a special pathway that allows electrical impulses to be sent through the heart’s ventricles. In LBBB, the left bundle branch becomes blocked, causing these impulses to be decreased or even fail to reach the left ventricle.

LBBB is often an indicator of another heart disease, such as cardiovascular disease, which has been reported in 89% of people diagnosed with LBBB. According to medical website Verywell.com, this disease mostly affects people over 55, with only 1% of the population being diagnosed with it under the age of 50. The most dangerous complication of LBBB is heart failure, which is why this condition needs to be treated once found. Most commonly, LBBB is caused by long-term hypertension, which causes the heart muscles to thicken and interrupts the electrical impulses. In some cases LBBB develops as a result of a previous infection, such as myocarditis, which affects the heart muscles. Right bundle branch block, which occurs more rarely, is usually a congenital abnormality and is present from birth. In rare cases, these bundle branch blocks develop as a result of blood clots, which can also cause the heart muscle to thicken.

Symptoms

  • Dizziness
  • Fainting episodes
  • Pain in the chest
  • Anemia
  • Headaches

Diagnosis

  • An electrocardiogram is the most efficient and commonly used diagnostic method for this type of disease, as it can record abnormalities in how electrical impulses are sent. It also determines which bundle brand is affected and how much the blood pressure has changed due to weak electrical impulses.
  • An echocardiogram produces images of the heart ventricles and can determine whether LBBB was caused by another heart disease.
  • A blood test can establish whether LBBB has developed as a result of an infection.

Treatment

  • Conservative treatment is usually enough to treat LBBB. If LBBB is caused by hypertension, your doctor is likely to administer antihypertensive drugs and, in some cases, beta blockers. If LBBB causes low blood pressure and anemia, doctors use drugs to increase blood pressure.
  • A pacemaker implant is used in severe cases of LBBB. This device artificially regulates the heart’s electrical impulses to keep the heart beating at a normal pace.

Overall, LBBB rarely causes serious complications and treatment usually leads to a quick recovery.
