Aggressive T-cell lymphoma is the blood cancer, which develops in the T-lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are primarily immune system cells. When they start to multiply abnormally and uncontrollably, a person can develop aggressive T-cell lymphoma. Another type of lymphocytes are B-lymphocytes and their abnormal division can also cause development of cancer. According to Lymphoma Research Foundation, T-cell lymphoma accounts for approximately of all Non-Hodgkin lymphomas in USA. There are two major types of T-lymphomas: aggressive and indolent. The first type develops very rapidly and is more dangerous, as there is higher chance of metastasizing to other organs. The indolent T-lymphoma develops more gradually.
Aggressive T-cell lymphoma is equally common among children and adults. It can start in any organ and can manifest itself as either lump or enlarged lymph nodes. Although there is no known cause for aggressive T-cell lymphoma, Epstein-Barr virus and T-cell leukemia are believed to be the leading cause of aggressive T-cell lymphoma. These diseases weaken the immune system of a person, making it self-destructive in some cases. Early diagnosis and treatment by chemotherapy are considered the best treatment options nowadays, as they allow to stop the division of abnormal T-cells.
- Lump in the body
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Anemia
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- A complete blood count is used to determine if there is abnormal amount of T-cell lymphocytes in the blood.
- CT scan and MRI are used to determine which organs were affected and where tumor started to accumulate.
- A chest X-ray and ultrasound of kidney, liver and lungs are used.
Chemotherapy is most commonly used for treatment of aggressive T-cell lymphoma to stop malignant T-cell lymphocytes from abnormal division and from further formation of malignancy. A high-intensity chemotherapy is primarily used to fight aggressive T-cell lymphoma. A person needs to undergo several courses of the chemotherapy to recover.
