What is a Bartholin gland cyst?

Bartholin glands are large glands of the vaginal vestibule, located in the posterior third of the labia majora at a depth of more than 1 cm. They secrete the mucus necessary to maintain a moist environment in the vagina and enable sexual intercourse. The glands include ducts that may become blocked as a result of an injury, a medical procedure, or inflammation.

If the ducts are obstructed, the secret of the Bartholin gland accumulates inside the labia majora. A small and asymptomatic cyst or a large and painful mass several centimeters in diameter may form.

Bartholin gland cyst treatment methods

The following methods can be used for the treatment of Bartholin gland cysts in Germany:

Cyst puncture. This manipulation involves needle puncture with fluid evacuation. This is a temporary procedure to quickly relieve the symptoms of the disease. Further treatment is required since the cyst capsule is preserved after this manipulation and the fluid will accumulate again.

Incision and drainage. This is an easy-to-perform method. A doctor makes an incision, evacuates the fluid, and leaves a drain tube. After the wound has healed, a large scar may remain. Relapses are quite common after such a treatment.

Cyst marsupialization. This procedure is a more advanced operation that provides good and long-term results but is quite traumatic. This is the most commonly used treatment in countries with poor medical development. It involves the removal of Bartholin cysts and the formation of a new duct in the wound to provide a secret.

Word catheter placement. This is the main method of treatment in Germany. It is a minimally invasive alternative to marsupialization. A small incision is made, following which a tube with a balloon is inserted inside. It is left for 1-1.5 months, and during this time, a new gland duct is formed. It definitely will not overgrow, so you should not expect disease recurrence. The procedure takes 10 minutes, and it is painless for a woman due to local anesthesia.

Jacobi rings. This is a similar technique but only involves the use of another device, namely a rubber catheter that exits the gland through two incisions.

Bartholin gland extirpation. This is the most radical operation for cyst removal because, during the intervention, the entire gland is removed along with the capsule. The advantage is the zero risk of recurrence. Disadvantages include a significant trauma rate, large scars, deformation of the genital organs, and a reduced quality of sexual life. Such operations in Germany are done only in the case of complications of the disease.
