About the disease

Rupture of the bladder can develop because of trauma or an accident. It can develop if there was damage to the lower urinary tract. If pelvis has been damaged, a person can develop rupture of the bladder. Most commonly, rupture of the bladder occurs as a result of fall or car accident. It can also occur as a result of work injury and, in rare cases, of sport injury. Rupture of the bladder can be very severe and have consequences if at the time of an accident bladder was full with urine. In fact, the more the bladder was filled, the more severe the rupture is. Also, full bladder is more susceptible to rupture probability in case of an accident. Nonetheless, if diagnosed early, rupture of the bladder has excellent recovery rates and this condition can be treated effectively upon immediate surgical intervention.

In most cases, rupture of the bladder occurs as a result of direct blow or hit which was directed precisely at the bladder. In fact, according to EPainAssist.com, almost 82& of all rupture of the bladder cases are caused by injuries. In some cases rupture of the bladder can also occur as a result of penetrating trauma. Penetrating trauma can occur as a result of assault of previous surgery, was the bladder was affected. Rupture of the bladder can not occur without a serious underlying cause. Spontaneous rupture of the bladder develops only in 2% of all cases of this condition and even in these cases there have been serious factors which lead to the rupture.

Symptoms

  • Acute pain in the pelvis region
  • Tenderness
  • Secondary pain if the pelvic bones had been fractured as well
  • Bleeding
  • Red urine
  • Retention of urine
  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation

Diagnosis

  • During an initial examination, a doctor will inquire what kind of trauma or injury a person has been subject to and which area has been damaged.
  • Cystogram is an imaging test of the bladder which allows to see if there has been rupture. It is performed with the help of dye injected into the bladder.
  • CT scan of the kidneys and ureter is used to determine if these organs function normal and if there has been no damage to them.
  • An ultrasound of the bladder can also determine if there is rupture. It can also trace signs of a hematoma which can develop as a result of trauma.
  • A blood count is used to check the levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells to determine if blood circulates properly.

Treatment

  • Reconstructive laparoscopic surgery is used to reconstruct the bladder and to normalize the urination. Prior to the surgery, a surgeon can perform catheter drainage and also eliminate all other problems of the bladder with catheter. After that laparoscopic approach is used to repair the rupture and normalize function of the bladder.
