Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, located on the banks of the Elbe River. It is one of the richest cities in the country. It houses the largest port, which is the "pearl of the city." Hamburg is one of the first cities included in the Hanseatic League created in the Middle Ages in Northern Europe, thanks to which it became the most important port on the North Sea. It brought great wealth to the city and left a rich cultural and historical heritage. The port city on the Elbe is often called the "Gateway to the World".
Hamburg half consists of parks, squares, reserves, rivers, canals and lakes. Formed in the 3th century, the largest Alster Lake is located right in the center of Hamburg and covers an area larger than the Principality of Monaco. The Neo-Renaissance City Hall can be considered as a landmark. Another symbol of the city is the St. Michaels Church with the 132-meter-high Michel Tower. Hamburg has a lot of various museums, for example, the famous Kunsthalle with a collection of artworks of the 15th and 20th centuries, the Museums of History and Ethnographics, the Deichtorhallen Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Erotica.
Historically, Hamburg has always had a variety of dishes and gastronomic traditions. Local sailors, who went to other countries, and the crews of foreign ships constantly brought something new to the Hamburg cuisine. Not surprisingly, the cafes and restaurants of Hamburg represent a huge variety of dishes, which belong to very different cuisines.
