About the city
St. Gallen is a political community and the capital that gave its name to the eastern Swiss canton of St. Gallen. St. Gallen has about 74,000 inhabitants, and being located at an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level, it is one of the most highly situated cities in Switzerland. St. Gallen is located at Steinach, the river that flows into Lake Constance. Founded in the 7th century, St. Gallen is still considered to be a cultural and scientific center of eastern Switzerland. The city is located on the main motorway linking St. Margrethen - Rorschach - St. Gallen - Winterthur - Zurich and Romanshorn - St. Gallen - Rapperswil - Lucerne and is known as the gate to the Appenzell region. The city is interesting for tourists because of the monastery church and monastery library, which are included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. St. Gallen is also known for its embroidery. The city also hosts a federal administrative court. The city was named after the wandering monk Gallus, and it is also called Gallusstadt. Most tourists come to St. Gallen to see the monastery church of the 18th century in the Baroque style, and visit the monastery's library with its ancient manuscripts. An Egyptian mummy Shepenese is a special crowd puller, although it’s far from fitting in. Further walks through the old town will discover skillfully decorated bay windows which tell a story about how in the 18th and 19th centuries the textile merchants from St. Gallen traveled all over the world. They remind us of the meaning of St. Gallen on the canvas and embroidery. To the south of the monastery, there is Mühleggbahn funicular that brings visitors through Mülenenschlucht gorge to "Drei Weieren" ("Three Ponds") recreation area in a suburban green zone. When the weather is good, it offers great views of the entire city up to Lake Constance, and through it to the German coast.
