Location
Bonn is a cozy and beautiful city located on the banks of the Rhine River. The history of the city is more than 2000 years old, so it offers its guests a lot of interesting sights. First of all, Bonn is famous as the birthplace of Beethoven, and it is also known for its university, where many great people have studied. In addition, Bonn has the status of an important political and economic center of the country. International diplomatic meetings and summits are regularly held here.
Traditionally, the heart of the city is the Market Square, where the city hall is located. It is one of the most famous and beautiful buildings in the city, which is also the oldest official institution in Bonn. It was built in the 18th century by order of Elector Clemens August.
Poppelsdorf deserves special attention – a baroque palace built in 1715 on the site of a destroyed medieval castle. The building was built in the Baroque style, while its facade is in the classical French style. Adjacent to the palace is the Botanical Garden of the University of Bonn, which was founded in the 19th century. The Botanical Garden offers about 8,000 plants.
Bonn has a large number of monasteries, churches, and temples. Among the most famous and interesting is the Church of St. Mary, built in 1887. The Old St. Martin's Church is the oldest and most beautiful temple on the Rhine. The Doppelkirche was built in the middle of the twelfth century, but until now, thanks to numerous restorations, it has almost completely preserved its original medieval appearance.
Bonn's many museums are located in the Museum Quarter. Animal lovers can visit the Zoological Museum. No less interesting is the nearby Museum of German History. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Science and Technology are also worth a visit. In 1981, the only Women's Museum was opened in Bonn. It is a real women's kingdom and will not leave any woman indifferent. The expositions of the most diverse orientation tell about the cultural and spiritual formation and development of modern women.
