About the disease

Cervical paraganglioma is a rare tumor. It develops in the form of neoplasm, which is neuroendocrine. It can develop at various sites of the body, such as head, neck, abdomen with the neck being the most common site where it can appear.

Cervical paraganglioma can be either benign or malignant. There is no way to tell if the tumor is cancerous or benign and only with time it will become clear what the nature of the tumor is. According to various statistics, if cervical paraganglioma is malignant and recurrent, the chances that it will metastasize reach approximately 50%. In case the tumor is metastasized to some other part of the body, the 5-year survival rates reach 45%.

Cervical paraganglioma develops from the paraganglia cells. These cells are located along the blood vessels. They are most present along the carotid and aortic arteries. The most common place of these cells is the bifurcation (division into two) of carotid artery in the neck, that`s why this tumor can appear in the neck. Nonetheless, it is considered to be rare and it is very uncommon for paraganglia cells to become malignant or to start forming the tumor.

Overall, the exact cause of cervical paraganglioma has not been identified yet. According to statistics, this type of tumor is 75% idiopathic, meaning that the cause of cervical paraganglioma has not been associated with genetic predisposition or any predisposing factors. Other 25%, however, are hereditary and if cervical paraganglioma runs in the family, it can be passed to the offspring. In this case, cervical paraganglioma usually manifests itself earlier than in mother’s/father`s case and the tumor may be multiple.

Symptoms

  • Cervical paraganglioma is usually asymptomatic.
  • The painless mass on the neck is probably the only symptoms of cervical paraganglioma
  • The lump does not present any discomfort

Diagnosis

  • During a general examination the doctor will feel the lump and will determine if it is painful. The doctor will rule out other conditions which could have caused the appearance of the lump, such as problems with the lymph nodes, recent infections or other diseases.
  • The doctor will examine the family history of the patient to determine if cervical paraganglioma runs in his/her family.
  • The doctor may order the blood tests to see if there are any signs of the inflammation.
  • Imaging tests may examine the lump from the inside and determine its exact location. Laboratory tests can help affirm the diagnosis and help choose the best treatment plan for each particular case.

Treatment

  • Surgical resection is the surgery used to resect the tumor. It needs to be performed very carefully not to affect the blood vessels.
  • The doctors can also use embolization and radiotherapy to shrink the tumor and also prevent it from spreading.
