About the disease

Salivary gland cancer develops in the cells of the salivary glands become malignant. Overall, salivary glands are responsible for producing saliva and fighting bad bacteria which enter the mouth with food. Salivary glands are also responsible for breaking down the food and making it easier for a person to chew.

There are three places where salivary glands are located. These are parotid glands, located on both sides of the face; submandibular glands, located right under the jawbone; and sublingual glands located right under the tongue.

Salivary gland cancer accounts for the group of cancers known as head and neck cancer. Most cases of salivary gland cancer develop in the parotid glands, as this gland is the largest of the three types of salivary glands. Salivary gland cancer can be a secondary case, if melanoma, a skin cancer, spreads to these glands and to the lymph nodes in its progressive stages.

According to Cancer.Net, salivary gland cancer is rare accounting for 1% of all cancers. Approximately 1 person out of 100,000 is diagnosed with this condition annually. Overall, this cancer is more common in people over age of 65. The 5-year survival statistics for salivary gland cancer is approximately 72% which are good indicators. The earlier person is diagnosed, the more are chances for a positive outcome. Although the exact cause of salivary gland cancer is unknown, age and also radiation exposure are thought  to be the leading factors.

Symptoms

  • A lump on the face, which sometimes can be present in the mouth
  • Numbness in the area where lump is
  • Restricted motion ability of certain facial features
  • Swelling of the face
  • The size of the sides of the face can be different due to the swelling of one part
  • Abnormal production of saliva or lack of its normal production thereof

Diagnosis

  • During a general examination, a doctor will examine the face of a person, asymmetry of its features and whether or not there is a lump. He will also examine the skin of the person as there can be a suspicion of a melanoma. Doctor will ask about facial movements and if all muscles work normally. Lymph nodes will be also checked.
  • An aspiration biopsy is used to examine the cells of the salivary glands under the microscope and determine if they are healthy. A skin biopsy can be performed as well to rule out the possibility of melanoma.

Treatment

  • Surgical resection is used to resect the tumor and the nearby tissues if they have been affected by it. Doctor may also need to remove salivary gland depending on the origin of the cancer.
  • Chemotherapy can be used to scatter and kill the malignant cells and prevent them from spreading further.
  • Radiotherapy can be used to shrink the tumor if it is accessible and to prevent it from spreading.
