Location

Located in the very heart of the country, in the central part of the Swiss plateau on the shores of Lake Firwaldstett, Lucerne is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. First of all, Lucerne impresses with its amazing natural landscapes, but there are also many historical sights and unique architectural monuments. It is not surprising that thousands of tourists come here every year, and each of them falls in love with this beautiful city.

The whole city itself is an open-air museum, since its centuries-old architectural heritage has been preserved almost untouched. The medieval houses are finely decorated with intricate frescoes and paintings, depicting the events that once happened here.

The symbol of the city is considered Chapel Bridge Kapelbrücke. This is a covered wooden bridge, which length is about 204 meters. The construction of the bridge dates back to 1333, so it is recognized as one of the oldest in Europe. The architectural monument is complemented by the roundabout Wasserturm tower that used to be a dungeon and arsenal. In addition, the Kapellbrücke houses the Heinrich Wägmann Art Gallery with a collection of about 100 works dedicated to the history of Switzerland.

Another important attraction of the city is the Mill Bridge, which was built in 1408. In 1568, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was added to it. It is curious that the Mill Bridge is also decorated with paintings by the Swiss artist Caspar Meglinger.

Along the northern part of the old city of Lucerne, there is the city wall with nine towers built between 1350 and 1408. Most of the fortifications were preserved in their original condition. Four towers can be climbed. The old fortifications of Lucerne are considered one of the longest and best preserved defensive walls in Switzerland.

A sad and sentimental sculpture called "Dying Lion" is one of the main attractions of not only Lucerne, but throughout Switzerland. A lion carved in a rock, wounded by a spear, is dedicated to the events of 1792, when the Swiss guards gave their lives to the last defending King Louis XVI.

In addition, Lucerne offers many beautiful religious architectural masterpieces, for example, the Lutheran Church, the Church of St. Leodegar and others.

This is not all that Lucerne has to offer its guests. The city also has many interesting museums, excellent shopping opportunities, cozy cafes and restaurants with delicious dishes of national and European cuisine.
