Location
Basel is the third largest city in Switzerland, which is located in the Rhine Valley, at the border crossing of France, Germany and Switzerland. The Rhine divides the city into two parts connected by six bridges.
Today, the city has the status of the center of the pharmaceutical and chemical industry of Switzerland. Basel houses major Swiss universities, where thousands of students from all over the world come annually. In addition, the city is the cultural center of Switzerland with many interesting sights. There are many museums, theaters, as well as concerts and festivals.
The heart of Basel is the Old City or, as it is also called, Big Basel. It is here that centuries-old architectural monuments are collected, in which boutiques, bookstores, cafes and shops of modern designers now work. The center of the Old City traditionally houses the Market Square with the City Hall. At the nearby Fishmarkt Square one can see the most beautiful Basel fountain decorated with a statue of Our Lady. Another attraction of the city is the Spalentor Gate made of red sandstone. Here stands the tallest building in Switzerland, namely the Market Tower with a height of 150 m.
It is impossible not to mention the Basel Cathedral, which is a symbol of the city. The external architecture of the shrine is made in the style of ancient Gothic, while inside the building is decorated in the Romanesque style. You can also climb to the top of one of the towers of the cathedral and enjoy the amazing panorama of the city.
The city offers an abundance of fascinating museums. The Historical Museum, the Jean Tinguely Museum, the Basel Museum of Art, the Paper Mill Museum and the Basel Museum of Antiquities are especially popular.
Basel is also a very green city. It is perfect for a calm rest and relaxation. The botanical gardens and parks along the banks of the Rhine will help you relax and rejuvenate. And one of the largest zoos in Switzerland will allow for immersing in the atmosphere of the savannah of Namibia.
