Location
Istanbul is the largest city in the country, as well as the leading economic and cultural center. The city lies on both sides of the Bosphorus Strait, which geographically divided it into Europe and Asia. Over its long history, Istanbul has been the capital of the greatest empires of the world – the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, and was also the religious center of Christianity and Islam. Therefore, it is not surprising that the city houses a huge number of monuments of cultural and architectural heritage, which demonstrate the glorious past of the current metropolis.
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, which is also known as the Blue Mosque, is rightfully considered a symbol of the city and one of its main sights. The Blue Mosque was built in 1609 - 1616. During its construction, a place was chosen so that the complex towered over the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara and at the same time occupied a large area. The special feature of the mosque is also the presence of six minarets – there are no more mosques in Istanbul with such a number of minarets. The uniqueness of the interior decoration of the temple is in tens of thousands of Iznik samples of blue color. They were made during the heyday of ceramic production in Iznik. Thanks to 260 round arched windows, the building is very well lit. The mosque also has a beautiful inner courtyard, where one can enjoy a walk.
Right opposite the legendary mosque is another important historical monument – the Hagia Sophia. In 1985, the Cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other monuments of Istanbul's historical center. The Cathedral is a magnificent building, which combines the elements of Orthodox and Muslim culture. In addition to the beautiful and unique interior decoration, the temple is interesting with its 107 colored marble columns, collected from the entire Byzantine Empire, a unique library and a "cold window", where even in the hottest weather a cool breeze blows.
While staying in Istanbul, one should definitely visit the famous Topkapi Palace and Dolmabahçe Palace. 25 sultans were born in the Topkapi Palace and an amazing love story of Suleiman I and the Ukrainian concubine Roksolana took place. Nowadays, it is a museum with 65,000 exhibits from the Ottoman Empire. The Galata Tower is also a favorite tourist destination, which offers a stunning view of the Bosphorus strait and majestic Istanbul.
In addition, the city has many museums, the most popular of them are the Istanbul Archaeology Museum, the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, the Istanbul Military Museum and others. To feel the local flavor, tourists often go to the main pedestrian street of the city – İstiklal Avenue, which is a landmark throughout its length.
The city also offers its guests excellent shopping opportunities. Istanbul has a huge number of boutiques and colorful bazaars, where merchants make great discounts. In addition, Istanbul is a true gourmet paradise. Here one can taste delicious national Turkish cuisine and famous oriental sweets.
