About the department
The Department of Otolaryngology at the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jens Peter Klussmann provides both diagnosis and treatment of all types of diseases in the field of otolaryngology, for example, head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, vocal cord and voice disorders, incl. speech therapy and allergology. Structurally, the department is divided into an outpatient center, an inpatient center and a surgery center. All the centers are located in the building 23 within the University Hospital Cologne.
The department has 5 state-of-the-art operating rooms. The operations can be performed with the use of local and general anesthesia. For this purpose, the department cooperates with the specially trained anesthesiologists. Every operating room is equipped with an operating microscope. In addition, in every room doctors can use laser technology and perform endoscopic surgery displayed on the monitor. In every room one can see digital imaging of the patient's data, as well as obtained X-ray images, MRI and CT results.

From 1989 to 1996, Prof. Klussmann studied medicine at the universities of Dusseldorf and Cologne. His professional career began at the University of Cologne. In 2004, he defended his doctoral dissertation on otolaryngology. In 2009, the doctor was invited to the post of the Chief Physician of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Giessen. Prof. Klussmann is especially focused on the surgical treatment of head and neck tumors, reconstructive head and neck surgery, treatment of diseases and tumors of the salivary glands and operations on the middle ear to improve and restore hearing. The doctor is the author of numerous scientific articles (e.g., malignant tumors of the head and neck) and one of the leading experts in the study of the role of papillomaviruses in malignant tumors of the head and neck. Through scientific research, he was awarded the most important prize of the German Society of Otolaryngology – Anton von Tröltsch Prize. Also, thanks to various studies abroad, the professor participated in scientific research, which was carried out in close cooperation with national and international research groups, including the Netherlands and the United States.
