About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital Cologne offers the full range of diagnostics and treatment in its areas of specialization. It treats all diseases of the ear, nose and throat. In the field of surgical treatment, the department specializes in sanitation surgery and hearing improvement interventions, including the installation of cochlear implants, middle ear implants and implantable hearing aids. In addition, special attention is paid to the diagnostics and treatment of salivary gland cancer and diseases of the ducts of the salivary glands, as well as rehabilitation in case of facial paralysis, etc. The department has 5 operating rooms equipped with state-of-the-art medical technologies, including the surgical microscopes of the latest generation, a robot-assisted surgical system, etc. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Jens Peter Klussmann.

The department is part of the Center for Integrated Oncology Cologne, which occupies a leading position in Germany in the treatment and research of oncological diseases. Thus, it employs experienced professionals who ensure the effective surgical treatment of head and neck neoplasms (certification of the German Cancer Society). In addition to the treatment of head and neck tumors, the service range in this area includes head and neck reconstructive surgery, facial plastic aesthetic surgery, treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the salivary glands, facial nerve reconstruction, fragmentation of salivary gland stones, etc.

In addition, a specialized Cochlear Implant Center conducts successful clinical activities on the basis of the department. The center performs more than 1,000 cochlear implant interventions every year.  Naturally, the center has all the necessary technologies to ensure the appropriate diagnostics before and after cochlear implantation.

A specially trained team of doctors takes care of young patients with otolaryngological problems. The specialists use the very latest hearing screening techniques in children of all age groups. They also have an exceptional experience in the treatment of childhood diseases, such as enlarged tonsils, neck cysts, ear fistulas, enlarged lymph nodes, as well as in the treatment of benign and malignant neoplasms of the head and neck (in collaboration with the Departments of Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine).
