About the department

According to the Focus magazine, the Department of Cardiology, Angiology, Pulmonology and Intensive Care at the University Hospital Cologne ranks among the top German medical facilities specializing in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases!

The department offers its patients the full range of medical services of the highest level using all the innovations available in these focuses. In the field of cardiology, the department provides a comprehensive diagnostics, sparing catheter treatment and hybrid surgical treatment. The experienced pulmonologists of the department specialize in identifying and treating the entire spectrum of thoracic diseases. The therapeutic options are complemented by first-class intensive care for critically ill patients. The Chief Physician of the department is Prof. Dr. med. Stephan Baldus.

The department has state-of-the-art equipment for making an accurate diagnosis, which is the key to a successful treatment outcome. In addition, the department operates three  high-tech Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Sections of Pulmonary Function Testing, Bronchoscopy. There is also the possibility of carrying out imaging studies of the heart (MRI, CT and echocardiography). The patients with emergency cardiac conditions are provided with comprehensive and effective care in a specialized Chest Pain Unit.

In the field of cardiology, the main areas of specialization include interventional therapy for coronary heart disease, catheter therapy for valvular heart diseases (in close collaboration with heart surgeons) and treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders (electrophysiology). Pulmonology focuses on care of patients with cancer and inflammatory lung diseases, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, embolism, pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension, etc.
