About the department

The Department of Adult and Pediatric Oral, Maxillofacial Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery at the University Hospital Cologne offers the full range of surgical treatment of maxillofacial diseases and defects, modern implantology and reconstructive plastic surgery of the head and neck. The department’s successful clinical activities are based on three important components, namely comprehensive diagnostics, high-quality treatment adapted to the specific clinical situation and careful follow-up monitoring of the patient's health. The surgical procedures are performed in perfectly equipped operating rooms, on both an outpatient and inpatient basis. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Zöller.

The department is a certified Center for Head and Neck Tumors (certified by the German Cancer Society). In addition, the department has won the status of the Center of Competence for Facial and Craniofacial Surgery. In this direction, there is maintained close interdisciplinary cooperation with the related specialists, for example, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists and orthodontists. Of particular interest is the treatment of complete cleft lip and palate, premature cranial synostoses and syndromic malformations in children.

The doctors of the department have an excellent reputation due to the outstanding results in the treatment of benign and malignant maxillofacial tumors. Depending on the location and type of neoplasm (benign or malignant), the general condition of the patient, as well as his wishes, the doctors develop a customized treatment plan. In most cases, the treatment process involves the experts in the field of radiation therapy, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, etc.

The removal of maxillofacial tumors often leads to the formation of functional and aesthetic defects, and therefore the treatment is provided in combination with functional and cosmetic reconstruction. Such a reconstruction can be carried out in the course of a single intervention (simultaneously with the removal of the tumor) or as a secondary operation. All surgical procedures are aimed at preserving the shape and functionality of the face. The patient will be thoroughly monitored by his attending physician during the next several years after the completion of treatment.

The medical team of the department makes every effort to provide each patient with optimal treatment, taking into account the aesthetic result. In addition, the department offers a pleasant and friendly atmosphere, doctors get along well with children. All this in combination with the cutting-edge medical technology and innovative treatments ensures the highest level of medical service.
