About the department

The Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology, Diabetology and General Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Benzing specializes in the treatment of kidney diseases, rheumatic systemic diseases and hypertension. In addition, in close cooperation with the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Preventive Medicine, the department provides medical care to the patients suffering from diabetes and endocrine diseases.

To provide a comprehensive medical care, a highly professional team renders the entire spectrum of modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the field of rheumatology, nephrology and transplantation medicine, including all types of dialysis and apheresis. The motivated team of doctors and medical personnel offers  each patient an individually planned program meeting all their needs and wishes.

In the field of dialysis treatment, the department performs all types of kidney transplantation and provides dialysis and plasma exchange to thousands of patients every year. The treatment is provided in accordance with the current recommendations and with the use of all anticoagulant possibilities (heparin, fragmin, argatroban and citrate).

Thanks to the patient-oriented, comprehensive medical care, specialization in nephrology and general internal medicine, as well as the world-renowned research work, the department holds a leading position among German nephrological clinics. In close cooperation with the colleagues form private practices in Cologne, the multidisciplinary team of the department is making every effort to continuously improve both prevention and treatment options.
