The Department of Urology at the University Hospital Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Axel Heidenreich deals with the treatment of various urological diseases. The main focuses include not only general urology, but also andrology, neurourology, female urology and urologic oncology. In the field of pediatric urology, the department maintains close collaboration with the Center for Pediatrics.
A highly qualified team comprised of 19 doctors and 36 members of medical staff takes care of the patients' health and provides them with a round-the-clock comprehensive care.The department has 3 operating rooms for open, endourological, laparoscopic operations and Da Vinci surgery, as well as one operating room in the Outpatient Surgery Center and ESWL Unit.
The main areas of the department's specialization include diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the genitourinary system in children, GreenLight laser therapy for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPS), male infertility (andrology), gender reassignment, urogenital malignancies, endoscopic surgery.
The department has three interdisciplinary centers:
- Center for Continence and Pelvic Floor
The center treats all forms of male and female urinary and fecal incontinence.
- Prostate Cancer Center
The specialists of the center aim to provide diagnosis, counseling, treatment and follow-up care for the patients with all types of malignant urological tumors.
- Prostate Centre
To optimize the treatment of prostatic diseases, the Department of Urology together with the private urology hospitals in Frechen and Cologne, as well as with the Institute of Pathology and the Department of Radiotherapy at the University Hospital Cologne form its own experience exchange network.
