The Department of Adult and Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Cologne offers the full range of diagnostics and surgical treatment of diseases of the brain, spine and peripheral nervous system. The department has a specially trained team of specialists for the treatment of neurosurgical diseases in children and adolescents. The clinical practice is based on an individual approach to each patient and his clinical case, which is the key to a favorable treatment outcome. In addition, special attention should be given to the excellent equipment and high-tech innovations available in the department. The Chief Physician is Prof. Dr. med. Roland Goldbrunner.

An important focus of the department's work is the treatment of nervous system cancers, which is provided in close cooperation with the physicians of the Departments of Neurology, Radiation Therapy and others. In 2012, the successful clinical activities in this field were awarded with the certification as the Center for Neuro-Oncology. To treat the entire range of brain tumors in children and adults (for example, gliomas, meningiomas, metastases), the neurosurgeons use modern equipment and instruments for microsurgical operations. In addition, during the treatment, the experts from the Center for Integrated Oncology are often involved in the process, which guarantees the comprehensive treatment at the very latest scientific level.

Also, spinal surgery is a priority of the department's clinical activities. In order to ensure the best possible accuracy of manipulation and the maximum safety for the patient, all operations are performed using innovative surgical microscopes and navigation systems. If necessary, doctors may use intraoperative neuromonitoring to assess the function of the spinal cord and nerve endings in real time. The doctors in this field are distinguished by their high professionalism and vast experience, as well as productive research activities aimed at the development of new treatment methods for spinal pathologies.

The department's competence covers the surgical treatment of nervous system diseases in children and adolescents. Of particular interest is the treatment of all types of brain tumors, vascular malformations of the central nervous system, pituitary disorders, congenital and acquired spinal diseases, as well as surgical diseases of the peripheral nervous system (for example, carpal tunnel syndrome).
