Location

Heidelberg is a picturesque city, located in the southwestern part of Germany on the banks of the Neckar River. Heidelberg is one of the few large German cities with preserved old city buildings, which were not affected by the bombing during World War II, so one can enjoy the atmosphere of the glorious past.

The largest number of sights is concentrated in downtown, which has one of the largest pedestrian areas in Europe and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Undoubtedly, the most striking and impressive sight is Heidelberg Castle, which rises 90 meters above the city. The period of its construction lasted from the XIV to the XVII century. It immediately catches the eye that the castle does not have a clear development plan and that all its buildings are built in different styles. Here one can see the examples of medieval architecture, Renaissance architecture, and German Baroque. In the western and southern parts of the castle, simple Gothic buildings predominate, while its northern and eastern parts have the magnificent and massive stone walls of the Renaissance palace, richly decorated with sculptures. The castle is surrounded by a magnificent garden, walking through which one will get a lot of pleasure.

The city also has many museums, galleries and cultural centers, for example, the Egyptian Museum, the Bonsai Museum, the German Pharmacy Museum, and others. In addition, the first university in Germany, founded in 1386, is located in Heidelberg.
